The Latin Quarter — so named because Latin was spoken here when it was the medieval university district — remains Paris's intellectual heart. The Sorbonne, founded in 1257, sets the tone. Roman ruins, including the Arènes de Lutèce amphitheater, remind you that this was Lutetia 2,000 years ago. Shakespeare and Company continues the literary tradition.
Student energy mixed with academic gravitas. More locals than tourists the further you get from Notre-Dame. The market street Rue Mouffetard has become more touristy but retains charm. Cafés are for reading, not just Instagramming.
